Respawn Penalties

Chapter 19: The Third Core

The smoke from the shattered automatons drifted slowly across the frozen flagstones of the forge chamber, dissolving into the sub-zero air of Mount Ironclad.

In the center of the platform, the third Architect’s Core Matrix hummed with a deep, rhythmic resonance. The geometric blue sphere pulsed slowly, casting sharp lines of light across the cracked brass gears and rusted piston assemblies lining the cavern walls.

Kaelen stepped up to the floating pedestal, his boots making a soft, crunching sound over the scattered fragments of frozen iron plating. Beside him, Lyra lowered her rapier, her breath pluming in the cold air as she scanned the shadowy perimeter corridors leading deeper into the mountain complex.

"No secondary backup units triggered," Lyra said, keeping her voice low. "The thermal shock wiped out their sensor nodes before they could transmit a distress ping to the regional network."

"Good," Kaelen replied, lifting his hand toward the pulsing sphere. "Because if the Crimson Guild catches wind of us clearing this vault, they won't send bounty squads next time—they’ll deploy a full strike force."

Kaelen pressed his palm directly against the glowing surface of the matrix.

A sharp intake of breath hissed through his teeth as a wave of intense, data-rich energy flooded up his arm, surging straight into his system interface. The world around him froze as a cascade of bright blue holographic notification banners flooded his vision.

[ARCHITECT’S CORE MATRIX SECURED (3/5)]

[DATA SYNC IN PROGRESS... 100%]

[PARTIAL ATTRIBUTE SYNTHESIS AUTHORIZED]

[PERMANENT AGILITY PENALTY REDUCED: 10% -> 5%]

A sudden, powerful rush of vitality surged through Kaelen’s muscles. The remaining fraction of sluggish inertia that had lingered in his movements since his third death vanished entirely. His reaction speed snapped back to its peak efficiency, matching the lethal reflexes he had mastered years ago before the Penalization Patch locked away his stats.

He curled his fingers into a tight fist, marveling at the sheer absence of drag. Every muscle fiber responded instantly to his mental command, operating at full capacity.

[STAT RESTORATION COMPLETE]

[CURRENT AGILITY DEBUFF: 5%]

[NEW PASSIVE UNLOCKED: REFLEX SURGE (TIER 3)]

"How does it feel?" Lyra asked, stepping closer to observe his status panel flashing in the shared party interface.

"Like walking out of lead boots," Kaelen said, a faint, rare smile touching the corner of his mouth as he secured the matrix container in his belt pouch. "Five percent left to clear. One more fragment, and the core penalty is entirely gone."

"Don't celebrate just yet," Lyra interrupted, pointing toward the far wall of the chamber.

As the third matrix left its pedestal, a heavy grinding sound echoed from the back of the forge. A massive, sealed stone bulkhead—carved with the insignia of an ancient dwarven mining syndicate—slowly slid open into the dark bedrock, revealing a deep, subterranean railway tunnel stretching downward into the mountain.

[HIDDEN AREA UNLOCKED: SUB-LEVEL 4 TRANSIT LINE]

[OBJECTIVE: LOCATE THE FOURTH ARCHITECT VAULT]

Kaelen drew his twin stilettos, the polished blades catching the blue glow of the remaining system runes. "Looks like the vault isn't the end of the line. Let's move before the transit system registers our presence."
