Chapter 20: Sub-Level Transit
The newly unsealed bulkhead hissed as ancient pneumatic seals disengaged, venting a thick cloud of frigid, mineral-heavy air straight into the forge chamber.
Kaelen stepped through the stone threshold first, his leather boots making quiet, measured contact against the rusted iron ties of an ancient subterranean dwarven rail line. Below them, twin steel tracks vanished into a pitch-black tunnel that sloped sharply downward at a steep angle toward the deepest, forgotten roots of Mount Ironclad.
[LOCATION ENTERED: SUB-LEVEL 4 TRANSIT SHAFT]
[ZONE HAZARD: UNPROTECTED ELEVATION DROP]
[SYSTEM STATUS: DEDICATED RAIL POWER ACTIVE]
"This isn't an active player corridor," Lyra observed, her silver familiar casting a steady, narrow beam of bright amber light into the dark abyssal shaft. "The regional map HUD completely cuts off right at the threshold. Whatever is housed down here hasn't been indexed by the main game server since the launch of the Penalization Patch."
"Which means no public player logs and no Crimson Guild waypoints," Kaelen said, his eyes scanning the track controls mounted beside a heavy, brass-reinforced mining cart resting on the rails.
With his permanent agility penalty now reduced down to a mere 5%, Kaelen’s movements were exceptionally fluid and razor-sharp. He leaped onto the wooden platform of the transit cart with effortless grace, testing the ancient mechanical hand-brake assembly with a quick pull of his wrist. His new Reflex Surge passive hummed softly in his interface, providing an instantaneous +10% reaction buffer whenever hostile indicators crossed his perimeter.
"The track manual controls are still fully responsive," Kaelen noted, pulling a heavy brass lever backward. "The primary geothermal generator in the upper forge must be feeding auxiliary power directly down the line."
Lyra climbed aboard, stepping to the rear of the cart and raising her rapier as her mana bar topped off at maximum capacity. "If we take this rail, how far down into the mountain grid does it go?"
"Varis’s decrypted slate showed five core matrices in total," Kaelen said, eyeing the dark, curving tunnel ahead. "The first two were surface and mid-tier vaults. The third was this forge. That means the fourth matrix is housed in the deep core—the old dwarven research sanctuary."
With a deep, metallic clunk, the heavy brake teeth disengaged from the track. The massive brass cart lurched forward, rapidly picking up momentum as gravity pulled it down the steep incline into the darkness.
The wind roared in their ears, whistling past the iron frame as the cart accelerated through the narrow stone shaft. Rusted support beams and dormant blue mana lines flashed past in a blur of motion.
Suddenly, a series of harsh orange warning indicators flared across Kaelen’s vision.
[WARNING: SECURITY GRID AUTOMATION ACTIVATED]
[HOSTILES DETECTED: TRACK-BOUND CRAWLERS x6 (LVL 62)]
[INTERCEPTION COURSE INITIATED]
High along the arched stone ceiling of the transit tunnel, six massive mechanical arachnids—constructed of blackened iron and equipped with razor-sharp mining drill limbs—unlatched from the rock face, dropping straight down toward the speeding transit cart.
Kaelen’s eyes narrowed as his Reflex Surge kicked in, slowing his perception of the incoming automatons to a crawl. "Lyra, hold the brake lever! I’ll clear the tracks!"
