Respawn Penalties

Chapter 18: Thermal Shock

Kaelen unslung his wrist launcher, quietly locking a heavy steel-tipped tether line into the mechanism.

High above the central platform, thick iron pipes filled with ancient geothermal steam ran along the cavern ceiling. Frost clung to the outer iron casing, but the faint amber HUD indicators overlaying Kaelen’s sight confirmed the pipes were still holding massive internal pressure.

"Lyra," Kaelen whispered, pointing toward the heavy release valves mounted along the east wall. "When I rupture the main line, those wardens are going to shift their thermal tracking straight to the heat source. I need you to pull those emergency levers the second the temperature spikes."

"Got it," Lyra nodded, sliding quietly along the shadows of the outer wall toward the dwarven control console. "Just make sure you aren't standing under that pipe when it blows."

Kaelen took a deep breath, flexing his fingers as he adjusted his stance on the frozen ledge. With his agility penalty sitting at only 10%, his reaction speed felt sharp, crisp, and responsive.

He aimed his launcher upward and fired.

The steel bolt slammed directly into the primary pressure valve above the central platform. A deafening metallic screech echoed through the vast chamber as the rusted iron valve shattered, releasing a roaring jet of superheated, glowing orange steam straight down onto the central forge platform.

[ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD ACTIVATED: HIGH-PRESSURE THERMAL VENT]

[TEMPERATURE SPIKE DETECTED: +180°C]

The four Frost-Iron Wardens flared to life instantly. Their chest cores flashed a brilliant crimson as their thermal scanners registered the massive heat bloom above them. Muffled mechanical gears grinding against frozen oil filled the room as the four towering constructs turned in unison, raising their steam-powered halberds toward the ceiling.

"Lyra, pull it now!" Kaelen shouted.

Lyra slammed her weight against the twin control levers, locking the emergency coolant lines into full discharge mode. Heavy brass nozzles along the floor hissed open, blasting a concentrated wave of sub-zero liquid frost directly onto the steam-scalded automatons.

The sudden shift from extreme heat to freezing liquid triggered a violent thermodynamic reaction.

[SYSTEM EVENT: THERMAL SHOCK APPLIED]

[ARMOR DENSITY REDUCED BY 60%]

[STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY CRITICAL]

The wardens' outer plate armor cracked like brittle glass under the sudden stress. Deep, glowing fissures spread across their iron chests as their joint seals fractured.

Kaelen didn't waste a millisecond. Pushing off the stone ledge, he launched himself onto the central platform in a blurred sprint. His recovered 10% agility allowed him to weave through the thrashing halberd strikes effortlessly, his twin stilettos spinning into a lightning-fast reverse grip.

He drove both blades straight into the cracked chest seam of the first warden, shattering its core in a shower of brilliant blue sparks.

[CRITICAL HIT: 4,820 DAMAGE]

[TARGET ELIMINATED: FROST-IRON WARDEN]

Kaelen pivoted on his heel, using the momentum to spring toward the second construct before its swinging blade could hit the floor. He planted a boot against its armored knee, vaulting upward to drive his dagger through its glowing eye visor.

Within twenty seconds of precise, rapid strikes, all four Level 60 constructs collapsed into piles of smoking, shattered scrap metal across the platform floor.

In the center of the silent forge, the third Architect’s Core Matrix descended, floating inches above Kaelen’s outstretched hand.
