Chapter 17: The Glacier Vault
The howling wind of the blizzard faded into a hollow, echoing murmur as Kaelen and Lyra stepped through the colossal granite arches leading into Mount Ironclad.
Behind them, the frozen mountain pass dropped away into a vast, churning sea of white mist, swallowing the snowdrifts where the Frost-Fang mercenary team remained pinned. Ahead, two towering stone doors—carved in the likeness of ancient dwarven sentinels and coated in centuries of thick, glittering frost—stood half-open, offering immediate passage into the pitch-black interior of the Glacier Vault.
[LOCATION ENTERED: THE GLACIER VAULT (LEVEL 60 HAZARD ZONE)]
[AMBIENT TEMPERATURE: -20°C]
[SURFACE BLIZZARD HAZARD: NEGATED]
[THERMAL DRAIN PAUSED (INDOOR COVER DETECTED)]
Lyra let out a long, ragged breath, a thick cloud of white vapor rising into the icy air as her system thermal protection meter stabilized. She leaned back against the frozen stone wall, allowing her mana pool to slowly begin its recovery sequence. "At least we're out of that gale. My mana regeneration rate was dragging near ten percent out on that exposed cliff ledge."
"The wind is gone, but the hazards aren't," Kaelen warned, keeping his twin stilettos drawn in a low grip. His night-vision overlay instantly recalibrated to the subterranean twilight, revealing massive stone pillars lined with dormant blue mana conduits stretching deep into the mountain's core. "Varis’s map slate marked this sub-sector as an ancient dwarven forge facility. The automated constructs down here don't rely on organic sight or hearing—they track dynamic heat signatures."
Lyra’s silver familiar hovered close to her shoulder, dimming its outer illumination ring down to a pale, barely perceptible blue pulse. "So casting a flame spell or unleashing an explosive arc-light pulse will light us up like a flare on their HUDs."
"Exactly," Kaelen said, stepping quietly across the frost-crusted floor.
With his permanent agility penalty now sitting at just 10%, his boots made virtually no sound as he navigated the slick flagstones. The frustrating micro-delays that had once plagued his footwork were entirely gone, replaced by the fluid, lethal precision that had made him one of Aethelgard Online's premier assassins before the Penalization Patch was implemented.
Fifty yards down the central processing hall, the narrow corridor opened into a massive circular forge chamber. In the very center of the room, suspended above a dark pit of frozen slag, floated the third Architect’s Core Matrix. Its bright, geometric blue glow illuminated giant brass cogs and rusted piston assemblies frozen in time along the vaulted ceiling.
Standing guard at the four cardinal corners of the central forge platform were four towering mechanical constructs—Frost-Iron Wardens. Each construct wielded a massive, steam-powered halberd, their heavy chest plates glowing with a dull, icy blue core light.
[HOSTILES DETECTED: FROST-IRON WARDEN x4 (LVL 60)]
[TYPE: ANCIENT AUTOMATON]
[PASSIVE SENSORS: THERMAL SCANNER ACTIVE]
"Four Level 60 elites," Lyra whispered, crouching low behind a fallen pillar. "Their physical armor values are too high for standard stiletto strikes, and if we unleash high-tier magic, the heat will activate all four simultaneously."
Kaelen studied the high-pressure steam conduits running directly above the wardens' heads. "Then we don't use magic. We use their own forge systems against them."
