Chapter 12: Second Margin
Chapter 12: Second Margin
The quiet air inside the vaulted sanctuary felt thick and heavy with the scent of ancient ozone and damp stone.
Kaelen hauled himself onto the dry altar platform, water dripping from his leather armor as he removed his rebreather mask. Across the chamber, the massive rubble collapse behind them echoed with faint, rhythmic thuds—the Crimson Guild's vanguard mages were already blasting their way through the fallen stone archway.
"They'll breach that barricade in less than three minutes," Lyra said, wringing out the hem of her cloak as she stepped up onto the stone dais. Her silver familiar floated close, casting a steady, pale blue aura across the central pedestal.
In the middle of the raised dais stood a stone altar carved with complex, interlocking geometric runes. Floating two inches above the central indentation was a second sphere of pulsing blue light—the Architect’s Core Matrix.
Kaelen approached the altar cautiously, keeping his stilettos drawn. "No guardian construct inside the chamber. The collapse must have triggered the room's lockdown sequence."
"Which means the decryption puzzle is active," Lyra pointed out, pointing her rapier toward the runic rings circling the pedestal base. "Look at the alignment array. It’s an ancient core cipher. If you force the extraction without clearing the sequence, the matrix shatters and triggers a full zone purge."
Kaelen knelt beside the altar, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed the floating interface runes. His high Perception utility allowed him to trace the faint lines of mana flowing through the stone mechanism.

[EXTRACTION TIME LIMIT: 120 SECONDS BEFORE ZONE PURGE]
"I need you to watch that breach," Kaelen said, tapping the first runic ring to begin the manual alignment sequence. "The moment the stone cracks, give me a kinetic pulse to stall their entry."
Lyra turned toward the trembling rubble pile, her rapier held low as her mana gauge rapidly recharged. "Just unlock that core, Kaelen. We aren't fighting a full raid party in a dead-end room."
Kaelen focused entirely on the floating cipher. His hands moved with precise, methodical discipline, rotating the runic rings into position as the system interface chimed with each correct sequence lock.

Behind him, a loud boom shattered the quiet as the heavy stone debris exploded inward. Three Crimson Guild enforcers in heavy plate armor burst through the dust cloud, weapons raised, led by a high-level raid leader who immediately spotted the glowing sphere on the altar.
"There they are!" the raid leader roared. "Take them down before they touch the drop!"
"Lyra, now!" Kaelen barked, sliding the final runic ring into place.
Lyra unleashed a blinding wave of silver arc-light that swept the incoming enforcers backward into the flooded corridor threshold. At the exact same second, the stone altar unlocked with a deep, resonant hum, and the glowing blue sphere floated directly into Kaelen’s open palm.

A surge of warmth rushed through Kaelen’s limbs as the system restored a fraction of his lost speed. The heavy, dragging weight that had dragged down his movements since his last death instantly lifted, sharpening his reflexes back toward their former lethal precision.
Kaelen stood up, his eyes locking onto the advancing Crimson Guild party with renewed focus.
"Time to leave," Kaelen said, his daggers spinning smoothly into a reverse grip.
