Respawn Penalties

Chapter 11: Pressure Lines

The icy water closed over Kaelen’s head like a heavy steel blanket. Instantly, the familiar weight of his permanent agility penalty tripled under the fluid drag, turning every kick and arm stroke into a grinding effort against the tide.

Above his vision, a dark blue oxygen gauge flickered to life, counting down from twelve minutes.

[OXYGEN SUPPLY: 11:58]

[CURRENT VELOCITY: 1.2 M/S (PENALIZED)]

Beside him, Lyra moved with fluid grace. Her mage robes were enchanted with a light-weight buoyancy aura, allowing her to glide effortlessly through the submerged gothic arches. She cast a faint beam of luminescent light forward, illuminating the ancient, algae-encrusted stone pillars that led deep into the heart of the Sunken Spire.

Kaelen didn't rely on swimming power. Instead, he unslung his wrist-mounted launcher, firing a heavy Phantom Thread line into a stone archway thirty yards ahead. The line snapped taut, yanking his body rapidly through the water and bypassing the heavy drag penalty altogether.

He reeled himself forward in sharp, violent bursts, using the dungeon's crumbling architecture to tow himself through the flooded halls.

Ten feet below them, the shadow of a massive aquatic construct stirred in the silt.

[HOSTILE DETECTED: DEEP-DWELLER SENTINEL (LVL 52)]

[TYPE: ELITE AQUATIC CONSTRUCT]

The Sentinel—a towering serpent constructed of rusted iron plates and glowing blue mana conduits—uncoiled from the drowned floor. Its single red optical sensor locked directly onto Lyra’s light bubble. It lunged upward, its massive iron jaws snapping open with a muffled, booming underwater shockwave.

Lyra reacted instantly, thrusting her rapier forward to trigger a localized kinetic pulse that slowed the beast's ascent. But in the water, her spell’s range was cut in half, and the Sentinel barely flinched as it barrelled through the turbulence.

Kaelen didn't try to block the giant construct. He fired his anchor thread straight into the Sentinel’s upper neck joint, letting the creature’s immense forward momentum pull him along behind it like a shadow.

He rode the serpent's back as it thrashed through the flooded corridor, drawing his heavy stiletto and driving the point straight through an exposed seam in its iron casing.

[CRITICAL HIT: 1,980 DAMAGE]

[ARMOR SEAM EXPLOIT]

[MANA LEAK ACTIVATED]

Blue, superheated mana erupted from the wound, boiling the surrounding water into a cloud of scalding bubbles. The Sentinel let out a silent, vibrating screech, thrashing wildly against the stone pillars and dislodging heavy chunks of masonry that tumbled through the dark water.

"Kaelen, watch the ceiling!" Lyra’s voice echoed through their private party comms channel, muffled by the water density.

A massive stone archway, weakened by the construct's thrashing, cracked in half and plunged downward straight toward Kaelen’s path.

Kaelen released his grip on the serpent, flicking his line sideways to latch onto Lyra’s belt. He yanked hard, pulling both of them sideways through a narrow, ruined window slot just as the falling stone slab slammed shut behind them, crushing the Sentinel beneath hundreds of tons of rubble and sealing off the main corridor.

They tumbled into a quiet, air-filled chamber on the other side of the collapse, breaking the surface of the water with ragged, gasping breaths as their oxygen meters reset to full.

In the center of the flooded room, atop a raised stone altar surrounded by glowing blue runes, sat the second vault container.
