Chapter 8: Neutral Ground
Chapter 8: Neutral Ground
The biting wind of the Ashridge Badlands whipped across Kaelen’s face as they crested the final obsidian ridge. Behind them, the dark mouth of the Lower Crypts receded into the distance, but the glowing red ping markers on Kaelen’s minimap warned that Crimson Guild search parties were already fanning out across the plains.
"Four hundred yards," Lyra panted, her boots skidding slightly against the loose black gravel. "If we cross the blue boundary line before their vanguard catches up, the regional guards will draw weapon locks on anyone initiating combat."
Kaelen didn't slow down. "Don't count on guards to protect you on the fringe. Some guilds are willing to take the bounty penalty if the target is high enough value."
Up ahead, a ring of towering blue hard-light pylons marked the perimeter of Oakhaven—one of the few remaining non-faction settlements in Sector 4. The ethereal barrier shimmered like glass against the night sky, casting a cool violet glow over the gravel path.
Behind them, a loud whistle pierced the air. Three heavy mounts—cybernetic dire-wolves ridden by high-level Crimson enforcers—erupted over the crest of the ridge.
"Kaelen!" Lyra yelled, drawing her rapier as the lead rider unslung a heavy bola thrower aimed straight for her legs.
Kaelen turned on his heel without stopping his momentum. With a swift wrist flick, he hurled a flash-bang capsule from his quick-use belt directly into the dirt between the approaching mounts. A blinding flash of white light and a localized shockwave erupted across the trail, forcing the dire-wolves to rear back and throw their riders off balance.
"Keep moving!" Kaelen barked.
They sprinted the remaining fifty yards, diving shoulder-first across the hard-light boundary line just as a volley of heavy crossbow bolts slammed harmlessly into the blue force field behind them, dissolving into harmless sparks.

The lead Crimson enforcer dismounted near the barrier, his heavy plate armor clanking as he stared through the glowing blue wall at Kaelen. He pointed two fingers at his own eyes, then slowly pointed them at Kaelen’s chest before turning his mount around and riding back into the dark.
Lyra collapsed onto a stone bench near the perimeter gate, sheathing her rapier with a heavy sigh of relief. "That was entirely too close."
Kaelen leaned against the stone pylon, his hand resting near his belt pouch where the Architect’s Core Matrix rested. His stamina gauge was slowly ticking back up to green, but his permanent agility penalty still weighed heavily on his movements.
"We bought ourselves time, not safety," Kaelen said, his eyes scanning the bustling, crowded market square of Oakhaven. Players of all levels—many showing the faded gear and missing limbs of heavily penalized accounts—wandered between the neon-lit shop stalls. "They know what we took from that vault now. Every faction in Sector 4 will be looking for us."
Lyra looked up at him, her eyes steady despite her exhaustion. "Then we better find the second matrix piece before they find us."
Kaelen unrolled a holographic district map in front of them, highlighting four faint, glowing runic icons buried deep within the forbidden sectors of Aethelgard Online. "Four vaults left. Four steps to getting our stats back."
