Chapter 7: Choke Point
Chapter 7: Choke Point
The outer corridor of the Lower Vaults was a narrow, high-arched stone passage—a classic funnel designed to turn escaping players into easy prey.
Kaelen halted three meters past the iron threshold, holding up a single flat palm. Behind him, Lyra froze mid-step, her hand immediately drifting back toward the pommel of her rapier.
"Two stealth signatures," Kaelen whispered, his eyes locked on the ceiling arches above.
Because his sensory stats had been damaged from past deaths, his directional audio was completely dead; he couldn't hear the rustle of leather or the faint scrape of boots. But his high-level Perception UI—one of the few utility trees he had managed to preserve—highlighted faint, translucent distortion ripples bending the ambient torchlight twenty meters ahead.
"Crimson Guild?" Lyra asked under her breath.
"Scouts," Kaelen replied softly. "Holding the choke point. They know we're low on mana, and they know the vault boss is dead."
A mocking voice echoed down the corridor as two figures dropped smoothly from the rafters, uncloaking into full view. Both wore the jagged red shoulder guards of the Crimson Enforcement faction. The larger of the two—a Level 51 Vanguard holding a tower shield—grinned, blocking the entire six-foot-wide hallway.
"Look at this, Vane," the Vanguard chuckled, resting his heavy mace against his shoulder. "It’s the fallen assassin. The one who dropped three stat tiers in the Sunken Reaches."
The second player, a Level 49 Shadowblade, spun a pair of venom-coated daggers between his fingers. "Word on the regional chat is you just popped a sealed core vault, Kaelen. Hand over the vault chest drops, pay the exit toll, and we let you walk back to the neutral zone on your remaining two lives."
Lyra stepped up shoulder-to-shoulder with Kaelen, her silver familiar reforming in a swirl of light over her left wrist. "There's no toll on open dungeon zones, Vane. Get out of the way."
"There is when we own the door," Vane sneered, taking a slow, deliberate step forward.
Kaelen didn't waste time negotiating. In Aethelgard Online, talking to vault-campers was just giving their skill cooldowns time to reset.
Despite his agility penalty weighing down his movement like wet iron, Kaelen’s reflexes were built on years of muscle memory. He flicked his left wrist, firing a weighted Phantom Thread past the Vanguard's shoulder, anchoring it to the stone archway ten yards behind the two scouts.
"Lyra, low!" Kaelen barked.
He yanked the line taut. The wire caught the Shadowblade right at knee height as the assassin lunged forward. The scout stumbled violently, his balance ruined, tripping straight into his own vanguard's heavy tower shield.
[TRAP ACTIVATED: TETHER TRIP]
[TARGET DISORIENTED: 1.5 SECONDS]
Kaelen closed the distance instantly. He couldn't sprint with his old speed, but at point-blank range in a six-foot corridor, speed didn't matter—spacing did. He slid under the Vanguard’s wild mace swing, driving his primary stiletto clean through the joint between the player's neck guard and breastplate.
[CRITICAL HIT: 2,450 DAMAGE]
[ARMOR SEAM EXPLOIT]
"Clear the door!" Kaelen yelled, yanking his blade free as Lyra unleashed a blinding cone of kinetic arc-light that swept both disoriented players into the dungeon wall.
Without waiting to check the loot logs, Kaelen and Lyra burst past the stumbling scouts, sprinted down the remaining length of the corridor, and broke out into the open night air of the neutral badlands beyond.
