Chapter 14: Surfacing
Chapter 14: Surfacing
The dark underwater current dragged them through fifty yards of narrow, flooded stone channels before shooting them out into the open waters of the sunken outer basin.
Kaelen kicked hard against the rising current, his boots cutting through the water with noticeably greater power than before. The 10% agility recovery wasn't just a number on his UI panel—it was a restored rhythm, making his stroke cleaner and his directional control far sharper as he pulled Lyra upward toward the faint ring of moonlight shimmering on the lake’s surface.
They broke through the cold water together, gasping as fresh air filled their lungs.
Kaelen hauled himself onto a flat shelf of volcanic obsidian lining the lake's southern shore. He immediately turned and offered his hand to Lyra, pulling her up out of the black water. She collapsed onto the smooth stone beside him, her wet cloak heavy against her shoulders as her silver familiar circled overhead, casting a warm amber glow over their resting spot.
"We... actually cleared it," Lyra panted, wiping wet strands of hair from her face. She looked down at her party interface, where Kaelen’s updated stat profile was displayed. "Ten percent agility penalty remaining. Your movement speed drag is down to a fraction of what it was when we met at the Lower Vaults."
Kaelen flexed his left hand, opening and closing his fingers into a tight fist. His input latency—the micro-delay between his mental command and his avatar's physical response—was nearly gone.
"It's enough to keep up with Level 50 vanguard players," Kaelen said, his voice quiet as he unlatched his Architect’s Core Matrix pouch. "But the Crimson Guild won't make the same mistake twice. Varek saw me recover that stat line in real time. Before the hour is out, the entire regional guild network will know that permanent penalties can be erased."
A sharp, chime rang through the air as both of their system interfaces flashed bright crimson.
[REGIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT: HIGH-VALUE TARGET MARKED]
[PLAYER: KAELEN (RENN)]
[BOUNTY: 100,000 GOLD COINS / CRIMSON GUILD ENFORCEMENT]
[LAST KNOWN LOCATION: SECTOR 4 - SUNKEN SPIRE BASIN]
Lyra stared at the flashing holographic banner floating above her wrist. "A hundred thousand gold. That's enough to buy a guild hall in the capital. Every mercenary and bounty hunter in Sector 4 is going to be scanning this basin within ten minutes."
"Then we don't stay in Sector 4," Kaelen said, pulling up Varis’s decrypted map slate. The map expanded, highlighting the third glowing runic marker located far to the north, buried deep within a frozen, high-level wilderness zone. "The third vault is inside the Frostfell Ridge—a Level 60 hazard zone. The cold debuffs there will slow down large pursuit parties, and the terrain favors solo stealth over guild raids."
Lyra stood up, drawing her rapier to shake off the clinging droplets of water before sheathing it at her waist. "Level sixty monsters and sub-zero thermal drains. You really know how to pick a vacation spot."
Kaelen pulled his dark hood over his head, his stilettos resting comfortably at his sides. "We move north before their scouts seal the mountain passes."
